The Friends of the Berkshire Athenaeum are pleased to sponsor Navigation for Caregivers, a series of three free workshops designed to help busy family caregivers of seniors, scheduled for November & December and to be presented by Bob Dean. All workshops are located at the Athenaeum.
At 7 pm on Thursday, November 14, we offer A Caregiver’s Guide for the Holidays. It’s not your Norman Rockwell Holiday anymore. Thanksgiving is upon us with the December holidays to follow. The holidays can be very stressful for family caregivers of seniors, who are struggling to balance traditional holiday expectations with the realities of the current situation. The workshop helps family caregivers to: 1) navigate stressful holiday situations and recognize potential “hot button” areas; and, 2) re-evaluate holiday expectations and begin to create new traditions.
At 7 pm on Wednesday, December 4 the program is The ABCs of Navigation for Caregivers, a 90 minute workshop for busy family caregivers of seniors who are feeling the stress and anxiety of trying to balance the competing demands of caregiving, family and work responsibilities. The workshop: 1) provides information about the many resources and services that are available for seniors and caregivers; 2) helps the caregiver recognize the importance of taking care of his/her own physical and mental wellbeing; and, 3) provides strategies to help improve the quality of life of both the caregiver and care recipient. Space is limited and preregistration is required for this session. Registration opens November 13 and can be made with the Reference Department at 413 499-9480 x202 or email@example.com
Scam Awareness and Prevention will be presented at 12 noon on Tuesday, December 10. When it sounds too good to be true… Scams come in many shapes and forms (face-to-face, mail, telephone, grandparent, computer, international etc.). Seniors and stressed family caregivers are a prime target. The workshop provides: 1) a greater understanding of various scams and how they work; and, 2) what family caregivers and seniors need to know to keep from being victims.
The presenter for the three programs is Bob Dean, director of Navigation for Caregivers. Dean has an extensive background working with seniors and family caregivers and as a family caregiver himself. From 2003 through 2012, Bob served as executive director of Elder Services of Berkshire County, Inc., the federally designated Area Agency on Aging, and the state designated Aging Services Access Point for Berkshire County. From 1999 through 2003, Bob served as Elder Services’ director of client services, and, in that capacity, helped to implement the agency’s family caregiver support program. Bob can be reached at Navigation for Caregivers (413) 464-1519, e-mail address: firstname.lastname@example.org.
