In these workshops, writers will be coached in creating short stories, which they will be encouraged to enter in the Berkshire Athenaeum Short Story Writing Contest.

“Melville and Me” Musical Improv with Musician JoAnne Spies
Join JoAnne Spies in creating music together from the themes of Herman Melville and Moby Dick. Young audiences will love learning while singing along.

Jana Laiz is the author of the triple Award Winning YA novel, Weeping Under This Same Moon: Elephants of the Tsunami, written to raise money for tsunami relief; the co-author of “A Free Woman On God’s Earth; and, most recently, The Twelfth Stone, a Celtic American fantasy for young adults and adults. Jana is the inaugural Writer-In-Residence at Herman Melville’s Arrowhead, where she has the honor to write in the study where Melville wrote Moby Dick. Her favorite thing to do is to share her passion for writing with kids of all ages. Her workshops are fun and engaging and she loves to inspire young writers!
JoAnne Spies is a singer/songwriter from Chicago on the faculty of Community Access to the Arts in Great Barrington, MA. JoAnne was recently a Fellow at the Millay Colony and is on the Massachusetts Cultural Council Performing Roster. She has produced 2 CD’s of original blues, jazz and country tunes: “2 x 3” with Jack Douglas and “Me & Melville”. Her one-woman multi-media show ‘Me & Melville’ has been performed at Dixon Place in NYC, Herman Melville’s home Arrowhead, and colleges and museums in the northeast. A graduate of the four-year Musicianship Leadership Program of Music for People and Elder Arts Initiative Training, JoAnne leads groups of all ages in music improvisation with a focus on storytelling, songwriting and rhythm.
VOICES Theatre Company was founded in 1991 with a focus on educational productions. Under the artistic direction of Sally Filkins, the group has cooperated with the Berkshire Historical Society to add historical programs to their repertoire, creating “Shades of the Revolution” and “Sentimental Journey: The Music Pittsfield Sung and Listened to from 1761 to 1945” for Pittsfield’s 250th anniversary. VOICES is continuing to bring history to life with “Melvilles and Morewoods”, “Melville’s Women”, and “Melville, Haunted”, all playing at Arrowhead.
