The 11th Annual Berkshire Library Legislative Breakfast was hosted at the Berkshire Athenaeum on Friday, March 6. Present were Senator Benjamin Downing; Representative Christopher Speranzo; and Representative Denis Guyer to hear the concerns of area librarians.
Leading off the program, Director of the Massachusetts Board of Library Commissioners Robert Maier described the work of Commonwealth libraries in delivering services on which citizens depend to improve their lives, support their education, build their communities, and sustain our democracy. With the observation that, “Libraries are instruments of recovery,” Maier pointed out that state funded programs are critical to the provision of library services. Jan Resnick, Assistant Administrator of the Western Massachusetts Regional Library System, reminded all present that no library can meet the demands of its users with local resources alone.
